Dual Perspectives on Things That Are Not Seen

Are the meanings in images purely superficial? 

How deep do the ‘unseen layers’ of ‘seen images’ go? 

Do we perceive them? 

We see images. Meaning is given to those images.

The story that the ‘seen’ images tell come in different forms according to the depth of the ‘unseen‘ layers. We create meanings all the time, without perceiving the hidden side of the ‘seen’ images. We see things through our eyes, because of this, the meaning of the unseen layers often go unnoticed in our conscious minds. These lost meanings live on in our subconscious and reveal themselves in the presence of an emotional catalyst. Like a poem, we add a richer meaning to the unseen and it may overwhelm us or cause us to look away. 

Every emotion we feel during every moment in the day, the ideas that are expanded upon by these emotions are important factors in my work. Therefore, it is unnecessary to explain the themes in my work, they are found everywhere, embedded in our lives, yet difficult to take out. They are stories we know, live out, and feel because we are human.

In a piece of art, there are images that are seen and there are things that are hidden. The same is true in people. There are images that are seen and things that are hidden. Art may be people, and people may be art. If you find yourself in front of a piece of art, the thing in front of you may be something you know or don’t know. It may even be yourself. Seeing is not an isolated sense, but a synesthetic communion. I want to express this in my work. 

I wanted to focus on the ‘fear’ in our subconscious hidden beyond the superficial images. 

Even though we may not be alone, we waver, get discouraged, feel sad, lethargic and afraid, and then we hope and dream. I believe the process of this emotional change starts with our subconscious ‘fear.’ We ask of ourselves the discord we feel when we inhale and exhale. We feel the weight of the responsibility for the choices we make to escape from fear. Until our conscious mind stops functioning, the waves and depths of our emotions are like a perpetual canon, unending and unseen. 

By having multiple perspectives on the ‘seen’ and ‘unseen,‘ it is possible to use paintings to express ‘things that are not in the paintings.’ You are not just pulling something from a fog, but you are looking at the world within the real world. It will help you look more honestly at yourself. 

Every psychological battle in the works asks us to look into our conscious-subconscious emotions, to focus on the ‘unseen’ and to look within ourselves.

보이지 않는 것에 대한 이중적 시선

과연 ‘이미지’는 있는 모습 그대로 보여지기만 하는 것에서 그 의미를 다 하는 것일까? 

‘보여지는’ 이미지 이면의 ‘보여지지 않는 것’의 깊이는 어느 정도일까? 

매 순간 우리는 알아차리고 있을까? 

이미지를 본다. 그리고 이미지는 의미를 갖는다. 

‘보여지는’ 이미지는 ‘보여지지 않는’ 것의 깊이에 따라 다양한 형태의 이야기를 만들어 낸다. 

우리는 매 순간 ‘보여지는’ 이미지의 이면을 알아차리지 못한 채 의미를 생산해낸다. 눈을 통해 바라보지만 우리가 보고 있는 바로 그 것 때문에 보여지지 않는 부분들의 의미는 의식에서 드러나지 않게 된다. 그러나 상실된 의미들은 다양한 정신상태(무의식)로 머물러 있다가 감정을 촉매로 모습을 드러낸다. 마치 시처럼, 눈이 보지 못한 것에 더 풍부한 의미를 부여한 채, 때로 우리를 압도하고 때론 외면하게 만든다. 

일상의 순간 순간에서 느끼는 모든 감정과 그로 인해 확장된 사고들은 내 작업의 중요한 요소로 작용한다. 따라서 내 작품들이 말하고 있는 주제는 굳이 설명하거나 설득할 필요가 없는, 생활 속에서 너무도 당연하게 발견되는, 삶 속에 녹아 있지만 결코 가볍게 꺼내거나 들추어 보일 수 없는, 인간이기에 이미 알고, 겪고, 느끼는 것들에 관한 이야기이다. 

작품 안에서 이미지와 이미지 이면의 보여지지 않은 것이 존재하듯, 인간도 겉으로 보여지는 이미지의 모습과 그 이면의 보여지지 않은 무언가가 분명 존재한다. 작품이 인간일수도 인간이 작품일수도 있듯이, 작품을 마주한 당신 앞에 놓인 것은 당신이 이미 알고 있거나 모르고 있는 어떤 이, 혹은 당신 자신일수도 있다. 우리가 매 순간 ‘본다’는 하나의 고립된 감각이 아닌 ‘공감각적 교감’ 으로서 작용하는 것처럼,나는 이러한 작용과 같은 작업으로 교감하고 소통하길 원한다. 

나는 드러나는 이미지 이면의 보여지지 않은 것에 대한 초점을 무의식적 ‘두려움’에 맞추어 이야기하고자 한다. 홀로 있지 않음에도 홀로인 매 순간 우리는 망설이고 좌절하고 슬프고 무기력하고 무서워하며 또 희망을 꿈꾼다. 이러한 감정적 변화를 겪는 과정의 시작은 무의식적 ‘두려움’ 에서 출발한다고 생각한다. 들숨과 날숨을 넘나들며 들이쉬는 숨을 선택하는 숨 쉬는 매 순간 혹은 그 수 만큼의 갈등은, 두려움에서 벗어나기 위한 최선의 선택을 갈구하고 스스로에게 책임을 묻는다. 의식의 활동이 멈추는 순간까지 결코 멈추지 않을 돌림노래 같은 감정의 요동과 깊이는 분명 보여지지 않는 것임에 틀림없다. 

‘보이는 것’과 ‘보여지지 않는 것’에 대한 다중적 시선은, ‘회화’가 ‘회화 이외의 것’을 이야기하기 위하여 제작될 수 있다는 것을 인지함으로써 단지 사물을 안개 밖으로 끄집어내는 것이 아니라, 현실세계 뿐만이 아닌 내면세계를 새롭게 바라보게 하는 회화적 경험을 통해 스스로의 치유와 진정한 소통을 이끌어내게 도와줄 것이다. 

모든 정신적 충돌이 일어나는 작품들 안에서 어떻게 ‘의식적-무의식적’으로 감정에 다양한 자극을 가하는지, 그림 안에서의 이미지는 정지해 있기에 우리는 그저 감상자가 되어 ‘보이지 않는 것에 대한 보여지는 이미지’ 혹은 ‘보여지는 이미지에 대한 보이지 않는 것’ 에 집중하며 내면의 ‘깊이’와 ‘사고’를 조용히 들여다 보기를 원한다.
