[Name] 작업에서는 존재 자체를 온전히 느끼기 위해 실재를 무엇으로 지칭할 수 있을것인지에 대해 끊임없이 질문한다. 어떤 대상을 두고 그것이 무엇인지 물었을 때 자동적으로 연상되는 단어가 어떤 존재를 말하려 하는 것인지 표현할 수는 있지만, 이름 붙여진 각각의 단어들은 존재 자체를 온전히 드러내는 것이 아니라, 단지 존재의 이미지를 대체하는 또다른 하나의 이미지를 가진 도구로서 기능하게 된다.
단 하나의 이름으로 지칭되어지는 각 이름의 뒤에 숨어있는 존재들은, 받아들이는 모든 이들에게 완벽히 같은 의미로서 이해될 수 있는가?
각각의 사람들에게 이해되어진 실재는 단 하나의 이름으로 통합되어져 명명될 수 있는가?
과연 우리들은 이름 뒤의 실재를 같은 방식 혹은 같은 의미로 느끼는 것이 가능한가?
문자로 표현되어지는 실재의 또 다른 이미지인 이름은, 과연 그 역할로서의 기능을 제대로 하고 있는 것인가?각각의 존재를 지칭하기 위해 만들어낸 또 다른 이미지로서의 문자가, 오히려 실재를 명확히 느끼지 못하도록 가로막고 있는 것은 아닌가?
이미지나 기억, 또는 육감으로 각자 다르게 느낄 수 있는 존재하는 모든것들은 우리가 매 순간 접하는 가장 구체적인 실재들이다. 또한 이것들은 외부만이 아닌 각각의 내부를 가지고 있으며 그 내부에서는 아무것도 사라지지 않은채로 남아있다.
나는 작품 [이름]을 통해, 일상에서 자연스럽게 만나게 되는 몇 가지의 이미지들을 사용하여 그것이 무엇인지 관객들에게 질문하고, 이미지를 통해 질문을 확인한 순간 머릿속을 스친 각자의 대답에 얼마만큼의 확신을 가지고 있는지 반복적으로 되물음으로서, 우리가 매 순간 만나는 현재의 시간 안에서 존재들의 보여지는 이미지 이면의 내부에 깊이있게 다가가 보기를 제안한다.
